Founded at the turn of the millennium, Manduka® has always been a company that put its customers and the environment above all else. Peter Sterios, an architect turned yogi, stumbled upon a simple, yet elegantly created mat that completely revolutionized the way he practiced yoga. This revelation was the inspiration for the whole Manduka yoga line.
Sterios' creation would not have been possible without the help of his generous yoga teachers. As a form of appreciation he sent a mat to many of the yoga teachers he admired including Rod Stryker, Erich Schiffmann, Victor Van Kooten, Angela Farmer, Rodney Yee, and Shiva Rea. As a traditional practice in yoga, these teachers shared these mats with their students and from there the word spread.
Manduka, derived from the Hatha Yoga Pradipika pose, Mandukasana, is named as a tribute to Sterios' yoga mentor, Shandor Remete. The delight he took in hearing the word roll of his tongue helped him solidify the faith he had in his new company. From there the joy has spread to over 35 countries worldwide.

While this mat is not cheap it is worth every penny. I've using it for 4 years 2 to 3 times a week and it still looks brand new. It is heavy, durable and looks great. Would never use another mat.

I find this mat to be very slippery. I asked friends and they told me to add a layer of salt and leave outdoor to dry and rinse off after a while. That way the surface would no longer be slippery. Apparently I was not the only one to say so. Besides, this mat has a lot of memory. Every time I go to class or at home, the edges are always sticking up. Try to flip it over and it never lays flat on the ground from one end to another. After spending all that money on a mat, I did everything I could to make it work. Now I have a Gaiam cheaper one that has been great right off the shelf.

Never expected to be so excited about the mat but I am. It doesn’t have any smell. It’s so solid and pleasant to touch! It’s became a part of me! I am in love with this mat! Yes, a little heavy, but if you do weights in addition to yoga- you will handle.

The mat is going to be heavier to carry than others, it can be easily mobile with a carrying strap, its 6 mm but if you've got any type of weak wrists, ankles, arthritis in knees and/or hips - you have to practice with this mat. Any lower level of density isn't as good, you'll feel the hard floor when you practice. With this mat I don't have to use blankets under my knees or wrists for my practice. I use the linear lines on the mat in the design to align my legs in poses, a great feature I didn't expect until I used the mat in practice. This will be the last yoga mat I need for years to come. I attend yoga 3-4x per week so I use the mat a lot each week.
